More than 75 people turned out on Thursday afternoon at Central Library to mark “Read Across America Day” and remember the late Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
A cartoonist and author best known for writing children’s books, Dr. Seuss’ colorful and imaginative works, such as “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham,” are often filled with rhyming, fun lyrics and positive sentiments.
This is the 10th year that The Rotary Club of Lake Charles joined with the Calcasieu Parish Public Library to hold the event.
“We believe young children who develop an awareness and interest in literature and language are more likely to enter school with increased early literacy skills and to experience academic success in later years,” said Lov Bernard, a new member of the Rotary Club of Lake Charles.
Gianna Warner, 8, said she likes all of the Dr. Seuss books because “when you read them they take you places in your head. My favorite Dr. Seuss book is ‘Green Eggs and Ham.’ It’s so funny and it always makes me laugh.”
Reece Tanner, 6, said, “My favorite one is ‘Cat in the Hat.’ It’s the most fun book and there is always something happening in ‘Cat in the Hat.’ ”
For Matt David, 21, who has autism, all Dr. Seuss books hold appeal. “Being autistic, it’s the words and colorful pictures that are so wonderful,” he said. “People with autism are really drawn to color and photographs; it’s how we best process things around us. Dr. Seuss books are all about color and photos so the books are just fantastic.”
Mayor Randy Roach read “The Cat in the Hat” out loud as children listened attentively and giggled. Several librarians and children dressed in costumes of Dr. Seuss book characters.
“I like Dr. Seuss books so much because I grew up with them and I think the books helped to give me a lot of my imagination,” said Kyla Clark, 13.
Samantha Mathis, 6, said, “I can’t pick out a favorite Dr. Seuss book because I love all of them.”
