A grand jury has indicted a 28-year-old Sulphur man in connection with a January two-vehicle fatal crash. Justin Dupont was indicted Thursday in state district court on one count of vehicular homicide.
Sulphur police said Oscar Limon, of Sulphur, on Jan. 22 turned his 1990 Mazda pickup truck left from Adam Street into the path of a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Dupont, who was traveling north on Lewis Street.
Mel Estess, Sulphur police spokesman, said Dupont and his 4-year-old passenger, who was improperly restrained and suffered moderate injuries, were taken to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital and treated.
Limon was pronounced dead at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. Estess said the investigation showed Dupont was traveling at more than twice the posted speed limit before the crash and that a toxicology report showed he had methamphetamine in his system.
Judge Thomas Quirk granted a request Thursday by the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office for a grand jury arrest warrant to be issued for Dupont. Estess said Friday that Sulphur police, when trying to arrest Dupont, learned that he was already in the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
He said Dupont faces other charges connected with the incident, including vehicular negligent injuring, driving under suspension, no insurance and improper child restraint.
