SULPHUR — Law enforcement and medical officials staged a mock crash for seniors at Sulphur High School on Friday.
“The No. 1 factor in crashes among people your age is excessive speed, followed closely by distracted driving and then by impaired driving,” state police Sgt. James Anderson told the students.
“In many cases it’s a combination of these. Wearing your seat belt is the No. 1 most effective thing you can do to keep yourself safe during a crash.”
Statistics show that car crashes are the leading cause of death among people ages 15-20 in Louisiana. In 2015, 64 percent of those who died in crashes investigated by State Police Troop D were killed by impaired drivers. The mock crash included emergency responders, extraction equipment and a hearse.
