SULPHUR — The 11th-seeded West Ouachita Chiefs took advantage of four costly errors by the second-seeded DeRidder Dragons to take a 3-1 victory in the Class 4A semifinals of the state softball tournament Saturday at Frasch Park.
DeRidder (31-5) was making its first appearance in the state semis.
“It happens,” said DeRidder Coach Todd Schulz. “We had a heck of a season being 31-5; I can’t complain. We fought all season and we just fell up short this year.”
The Dragons’ scoring threats were limited in the first three innings. They got runners on the corner in the bottom of the third inning but a groundout ended the inning.
The Chiefs scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning. Sam Eckert singled and later scored on a throwing error.
West Ouachita scored its second run on a throwing error in the sixth inning. This time Eckert scored on a wild throw to third base. The lead was extended to 3-0 after Jordie Wilwhite scored on a third DeRidder throwing error by in the top of the seventh.
“We had a couple of errors with throwing the ball around and it happens and they were able to score,” Schulz said. “I thought we did a tremendous job, we just couldn’t get that timely hit and score. We will be back next year.”
The bottom of the seventh inning for the Dragons started with Laela Quinones reaching on a single, followed by a Brooklyn Green walk. Brionna Crockett hit a two-out RBI single that scored Quinones. The game ended on a fly out.
Quinones had two of the Dragons’ five hits. Lauren Parson took the loss. She finished with six strikeouts and gave up four hits. All three West Ouachita’s runs were unearned.
