Area teams can punch tickets to Sulphur

A pair of two-way stars have helped Sam Houston reach the high school baseball quarterfinals for the first time since 2013.

Seniors Chris Haggard, a Centenary signee, and Peyton Johnson, a McNeese State signee, have carried the Broncos. Sam Houston will host Walker (18-19) in a best-of-three series starting at 6 p.m. today.

“They are high-character kids and their teammates rally behind them,” Sam Houston head coach Chad Hebert said of Haggard and Johnson.

Haggard is 5-1 with a 2.16 ERA and leads the Broncos in nearly every offensive category (.444, 5 HRs, 31 RBIs, 40 runs).

“(Johnson) has a lot of respect around the state,” Hebert said. “They worry so much about him that they pitch to Chris and they end up paying for it. Haggard has carried us offensively with clutch hit after clutch hit. You can’t ask a guy to step up more than he has.”

Johnson has a 6-3 record with a 1.80 ERA. He is hitting .327 with two home runs and 25 RBIs.

Walker, the No. 27 seed, knocked off No. 6 Destrehan in the first round and beat No. 11 New Iberia in three games last week.

“They are playing good baseball right now, otherwise they wouldn’t be in the quarterfinals,” Hebert said. “We have a lot of confidence right now since we beat (LSU signee Blayne Enlow of St. Amant). If we pitch and play defense as well as we can we will be fine going forward.”

Sulphur

On the other side of the bracket, No. 9 Sulphur (24-13) visits top-seeded West Monroe. The Rebels are on a 25-game win streak and are ranked in the top-10 in several national polls. The series will start at 7 p.m. today in Monroe.

Class 3A • Division II

St. Louis is one of three teams from District 4-3A, including South Beauregard and Iowa, still in the playoffs. The No. 8 Saints (21-14) will travel to No. 1 E.D. White (28-6) in the Division II quarterfinals.

No. 7 South Beauregard, last year’s 3A state runner-up, will have to get through No. 2 North Webster (21-8) to return to the state tournament in Sulphur. No. 5 Iowa (27-8) has won 11 consecutive games and will travel to No. 4 North Vermilion (25-12).

DeRidder

In Class 4A, No. 10 DeRidder (24-14) visits No. 2 Breaux Bridge (25-7). Last week the Dragons rallied from an opening-game loss, sweeping the Saturday doubleheader at Livonia to advance.

Each series will feature a single game today and Game 2 tomorrow afternoon. Game 3, if necessary, will be played 30 minutes later.
