Big turnout on first day of early voting in Georgia special election

Early voting is underway in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District for the special House election between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel. While it’s far, far too early to read any early voting tea leaves for signs of how the June 20 election will go—and reading early voting tea leaves may be best avoided anyway, since it’s a tricky task that’s led many election-watchers astray over the years—one thing seems clear: voters are ready to go.

In the first day of early voting for Georgia’s 6th District congressional runoff, 712 Cobb voters showed up to cast their ballot early, according to Cobb elections.

Turnout Tuesday was more than four times greater than the first day of early voting for the original race on April 18, which only saw 160 Cobb voters vote in person.

In Sandy Springs, in Fulton County, a problem with the voting machines combined with voter interest to cause a long line

Lots of early voters right out of the gate point to mobilized voters. The challenge will be to persuade the persuadable voters and turn out the infrequent voters. Ossoff needs to bank every early vote he can if he’s going to have a shot at winning this. Get full early voting locations and hours here.

Can you chip in $3 to help Jon Ossoff finish strong?
