Cop who killed 15-year-old honor student loses job while family waits for justice to be served

In a world full of injustice, every once and a while there are slow and steady steps that inch us toward progress. Tuesday marked one of those steps when the police officer who killed 15-year-old honor student Jordan Edwards was fired

Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber identified that officer as Roy Oliver and said he had been a member of the police department since 2011.

The announcement of the officer's dismissal was welcomed by the Edwards family. "We are grateful the decision has been made to terminate the officer responsible for Jordan's murder," a family statement read. "Over the past 24 hours Chief Haber has made commendable strides toward justice. However, there remains a long road ahead."

Chief Haber has been tight lipped about the actual cause for Roy Oliver’s dismissal—although we can guess that part of the reason he was fired is that his account of what happened didn’t match the body camera video. Oliver claimed that the car Edwards and his friends were in was backing aggressively down the street toward officers. He then fired into the car, striking and killing Edwards. But on Monday in a press conference, Haber admitted this version of the story was not true.

"I unintentionally, incorrectly said the vehicle was backing down the road," Haber said Monday. "According to the video, the vehicle was moving forward as the officer approached."

Haber added, "After reviewing the video, I don’t believe that [the shooting] met our core values." [...]

[In a press release on Tuesday, the department added]: "It has been determined Roy Oliver ... violated several departmental policies."
