After narrowly missing out on a trophy last year, an experienced DeQuincy Tigers boys track team will take another crack at reaching the podium today.
The Tigers lead the area’s contingent of teams into today’s Class 2A and 1A meets at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.
The Tigers have won plenty of trophies at the district and regional levels. Head coach Sam Smith said years or hard work has put his team in position to be in the mix for one of the two team trophies.
“Our strengths are what we have trained for the past few years, that we are going to be better conditioned than anyone,” Smith said. “Our seniors have had the opportunity to win a district title in all four years of their career and two regional titles because they have put in the work that we have asked of them.”
Smith said his team has confidence after winning the regional meet they hosted at Westlake last week.
“Any time you can walk away from a meet with a championship trophy it is a great feeling,” Smith said. “When you’re able to compete against 24 other schools and do it, that’s a huge accomplishment for our program. Of course there are always things you wish would’ve went a different way, or athletes you wish would’ve had the opportunity to advance.
“We had some very gutsy performances. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a high school athlete run a 47.7-second 400-meter run or close a gap in a 4x400-meter relay to win like Patrick Rogers did. All of our kids have shown a lot of heart throughout this season, but it really came out last week.”
Rogers enters the 400 with the top qualifying time. The Tigers won the 4x400 relay last year.
The Tigers have five entries in the meet. Smith said each of them can produce points.
“Each of them have an opportunity to stand on the podium and receive a medal at the end of their event, and they are all deserving of it,” he said. “Last year we were a few points shy of taking home a runner-up trophy with just about as many kids. This year, I’d love for our seniors to come away with that honor.”
Other contenders for individual boys events in Class 2A include Pickering’s Dontay Horgrave, the defending shot put champ, Welsh’s Logan Watkins, the top qualifier in javelin, and Oakdale’s Travian Daily, the top discus qualifier.
In the girls 2A meet, Kinder’s Chloe Cooper is the lone top qualifier, in the 300 hurdles.
In Class 1A, South Cameron’s Zachary Godette is defending high jump champion and East Beauregard’s James Bailey has the top qualifying mark in the pole vault.
In the girls meet, Merryville’s Ja’Cinda Carter is top seed and defending champion in shot put. Teammate Andrea Cournoyer is top seed in the 300 hurdles and Grand Lake’s Cameron Granger is top seed in high and triple jumps.
