FSU takes series opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the first of a best-of-three series in the Tallahassee Super Regional Friday afternoon.

Sydney Broderick doubled off the wall in center field to drive in the winning run. Ellie Cooper followed with an RBI single to right field for the insurance run. Broderick and Cooper had two hits apiece to snap LSU’s three-game winning streak.

Jessica Burroughs (27-4) went the distance for the fourth-seeded Seminoles (55-6-1), allowing three hits and striking out eight.

Carley Hoover (14-7) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits. Hoover struck out six.

The Seminoles, who have won seven straight, can eliminate the 12th-seeded Tigers (45-20) and advance to the Women’s College World Series in Game 2 at 2 p.m. today on ESPN. The Seminoles reached the WCWS in Oklahoma City in 2014 and 2016.

Bailey Landry was 1-for-3 for LSU. It was the 289th hit in her career, moving into second place on the school’s all-time list.

Florida State took a 1-0 lead when nine-hole hitter Cali Harrods started the third inning with a double down the right-field line. Morgan Klaevmann put runners on the corners after a bunt single and Jessie Warren hit an RBI single past Amber Serrett’s glove at shortstop.

LSU evened the score in the top of the fifth inning on an Emily Griggs RBI single to left-center field.

“Couldn’t be more proud of the team and the fight,” said Florida State coach Lonnie Alameda. “We talked about all season that we’d sometimes just touch the water a little bit and see how warm it is and not just jump in. But today we just go after it and I’m really proud of them. It is a great ballclub in LSU. Getting the first game under your belt is big and builds momentum for us. Obviously a huge game for us tomorrow.”
