Hackberry girls run for fifth title: New faces become integral cogs

Hackberry High coach Angie Little is hoping for the same old, same old at the Class C state track meet, as the Mustangs compete today for their fifth consecutive state championship.

The B and C meets will be run today at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium, starting three days of state championship meets.

This year’s Hackberry team has received a boost from newcomers, particularly in the field events, where several of last year’s point producers graduated.

Little said the Mustangs have good depth as a result of the majority of team members qualifying in the maximum four events.

“If everything plays out as it should on paper, we should be OK,” she said. “Of course, that’s just paper and it isn’t worth much. We have 12 kids that qualified, and seven of them are in four events each. We have a lot of new kids, especially in the field where we lost a lot of people from last year. We also picked up some runners.”

Little said she moved some veterans into new events this year.

“Karlie Stine, we put her in high jump and she is doing well. She qualified at 4-4, but there were only three people at the regional.

“She can clear 5-2. Some of the newcomers that have helped are Angelle Delcambre, a seventh-grader that does triple jump. Charli Little started doing shot put and discus to replace those we lost. Paige Sims is a new kid in shot put and Blaine Picou is a seventh-grader who qualified in four events.”

Little said the Mustangs will have challengers if they slip up.

“Saline is real good and should finish second (with 78 points),” she said. “New Living Word has got some good kids too. We should finish with 130 points on paper; hopefully we can do better than that.”
