Contraband Days will look a little different this year, with most events falling on the first weekend during a free 60th anniversary celebration.
Weekend festivities begin today at 5 p.m. and last through Sunday. Carnival rides will be available through May 14, with two final events — a 5-mile run and a Seven Slot Society Car Show — scheduled for May 13.
Annette Richey, event executive director, said the group had originally planned to bring back drag boat racing to the festival for its 60th anniversary. But she said logistical issues forced them to cancel last minute.
Richey said, despite the adjustment, she hopes that having no parking or gate charges will encourage people to come out and enjoy the event.
“It’s free, the weather looks beautiful, and we’ve got a very good lineup Thursday,” Richey said.
Thursday is Family Night, as well as National Day of Prayer, so no alcohol will be served at the festival today. Children are welcome to participate in the Children’s Costume Contest at 6 p.m. Local band Strange Theories will play at 5 p.m., followed by Elm’s District at 7:30 p.m. The event will run 5-10 p.m.
Friday’s activities include the annual landing of Jean Lafitte at the Seawall at 7 p.m., carnival rides, and live music by Ron Fruge & Family and Knuckle Deep. Mayor Randy Roach will also walk the plank at 7:30 p.m. for the last time before retiring in June. The event will run from 5 p.m. to midnight.
By far the busiest day of the festival is Saturday, with events starting as early as 6:30 a.m. and lasting through midnight. Events include a barbecue cook-off, a pirogue building contest, arm wrestling tournament, cannon demonstration, pirate parade and fireworks.
Live music will run throughout the day, with performances by Dean Manning & Mark Judson; the Rosedown Rockers; Willy, Waylon, Elvis & the Boys; Louisiana Express; Champagne Room and Cupid.
Sunday rides start up at noon and close down around 9 p.m. Activities include a cannon demonstration and Jean Lafitte’s grand exit, as well as performances by Jeremy Fruge; Twangsters Union; and Rusty Metoyer & the Zydeco Crush.
For the remainder of the festival, carnival rides and games will be available 6-10 p.m. weekdays and noon-midnight on weekends.
Flyboard demonstrations, live shark shows, butterfly shows and helicopter rides will also be available at select times.
