Memorial Day events

Memorial Day ceremonies are planned throughout Southwest Louisiana. Among them:

Lake Charles

An Avenue of Flags display will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, May 29, in Orange Grove Cemetery, 2023 Broad St. There will be 1,000 casket flags on display. A ceremony will be at 9 a.m.

Kinder

The Kinder Cemetery Association will present a ceremony and Avenue of Flags at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 29, in Kinder-McRill Memorial Cemetery, at 1610 Kinder Cemetery Road.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be in Kinder Bible Church, at the corner of North Seventh Street and Fourth Avenue.

Retired Army Col. Don Ladner will speak. Young girls from the community will place fresh flowers on the graves of veterans buried in the cemetery.

Vietnam Veterans of America Southwest Louisiana Chapter 215 will act as color and honor guard. A roll call and tolling of the bell will be conducted for the 153 veterans buried or memorialized in the cemetery. The ceremony will end with a rife volley and taps.

Seating under canopies and valet parking will be available.

Vinton

The Vinton Mayor’s Armed Forces Committee will hold a Memorial Day event at 10 a.m. Monday, March 29, at VFW Post 9854, 2292 La. 109. There will be a fallen warrior demonstration by the Kinder chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America.

Welsh

American Legion Post 283 will hold a service at 2 p.m. Monday, May 29, at Welsh Community Center, 101 Palmer St.

Guest speaker will be veteran Mallory “Doc” Lessard. There will be a memorial to veteran Donald Gillett, recognition of deceased veterans, and music.

A reception will follow in Welsh Museum, 202 East South St.
