Moss Bluff Middle honors public servants

MOSS BLUFF — In a packed gym Wednesday morning at Moss Bluff Middle School, students waved flags and clapped as law enforcement officers and others filed in to be recognized at an appreciation rally.

The Supporting Our Servants Club at the school strives to educate students about those in public service roles and gives them the opportunity to share their appreciation in various ways throughout the year.

“Thank you for the sacrifices you make on a daily basis,” student Luca Grossi said in welcoming public servants. “We honor you for your bravery, and you are our heroes.”

The school’s symphonic band performed during the event before Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso spoke to the audience.

“Let me tell you a little bit about bravery, strength and courage in regards to my profession,” Mancuso said. “It really all boils down to just doing the right thing every day. You can do the right thing too. The true measure of character is doing the right thing when nobody is looking.”

Mancuso said that although he loves his job and that it brings something different and exciting every day, the job also brings plenty of pressure.

“Five minutes before I began this speech, I got a call from law enforcement in Baton Rouge asking me to send 50 officers to Baton Rouge to help with possible rioting,” he said.

“These are the kinds of things that myself and my officers deal with at times. But we also have plenty of great things we deal with every day, and we often get a chance to do things that help citizens in our community.”

Sheriff’s deputies, Lake Charles police and firefighters, and state police attended the event.
