Plans announced for Lake Charles summer food program

The city of Lake Charles will provide free breakfast and lunch on weekdays to children under 18 at various locations during its Summer Food Service Program.

Last year, the program served over 180,000 meals. It’s funded by the state, although the city foots the bill on the front end. Expenses totaled $535,165 last year; the city budgeted $745,339 for this year.

Johnnie Mouton, program assistant director, said the program has been operating since 1968. He said the goal is to ensure no child goes to bed hungry in Lake Charles.

“When school is out, it doesn’t mean that hunger goes away,” Mouton said. “It remains, and we need to provide for these children.”

Mouton said each site is open, meaning any child can eat there regardless of whether they are enrolled in other activities, such as camps, at the site.

Although the program is designed to serve low-income students, he said, it is open to all students. The program is also open to students over 18 who are mentally or physically handicapped.

Mayor Randy Roach said administering the program is an important function of the city.

“The city’s Summer Food Service Program puts state funds to good use to help fill that ‘hunger gap’ so that we can make sure that every child in our community has enough to eat,” Roach said.

It will run Monday-Friday from June 5 to July 28, except for July 4. Below is a complete list of locations:
