House Republicans are voting on Zombie Trumpcare today, a bill most of them haven't read, that they don't understand, that hasn't been scored by the Congressional Budget Office, and that only 17 percent of the American public supports. They're voting to strip health insurance from at least 24 million people in the next decade and to end the protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Worse, they are voting on a bill that still exempts them from all that, with the promise that a later vote will fix that.
As Republicans rush to vote on their latest ObamaCare repeal-and-replace plan, it appears to still include a waiver exempting members of Congress and their staffs from losing the healthcare bill's popular provisions.House GOP leaders worked Wednesday night to fast-track consideration of their ObamaCare replacement bill without posting the bill text and without a Congressional Budget Office analysis detailing the effects of the latest changes to the legislation.
After they vote for this bill that would definitely kill people if it makes it through the Senate, they'll take another vote to undo that part. Like, sort of an afterthought.
If this whole bill hadn't been cobbled together with spit and baling wire, if they had actually spent any of the LAST SEVEN YEARS thinking about how to do health policy, maybe they wouldn't be putting themselves in the really, really stupid position of voting to exempt themselves from a bill that could kill their constituents. Maybe they could even have taken the time before bringing this monstrosity to the floor to rewrite it and get that part out.
But they didn't. And everyone is going to remember this vote. John Kerry will assure them "voted for it before voting against it" is a winning message.
House Republicans are hell-bent on ripping away our health insurance. Call your member of Congress at 202-224-3121, and demand they vote NO on a renewed Trumpcare that is worse than the one before. Remind them they work for you.
