Donald Trump wasn't super excited about picking Mike Pence as his vice president, but Pence has turned out to be just tremendous! He greenlights whatever Trump wants.
Hiring a national security adviser under FBI investigation? Sure!
Firing the guy who's investigating you? Of course!
Lying about the reason you fired the guy who was investigating you? Sign Pence up!
That goes double for White House counsel Don McGahn, whom Flynn explicitly warned during the transition that he was already the subject of an FBI probe.
Now we find out that Trump's advisers are urging him to lawyer up. Ya think? Maggie Haberman of the New York Times writes:
Mr. Trump has signaled he is likely to hire a new lawyer, but has not yet made a decision, according to three people who have spoken with him. Aides to Mr. Trump did not immediately comment on his discussions.
Mr. Trump is said to recognize that he needs help beyond the White House counsel. But he is deeply cautious in selecting people he trusts, and he adds new people to his orbit slowly.
"Deeply cautious"—as in insisting on appointing a foreign agent to the most sensitive national security post in your administration?
What's really happening here is that Trump needed a damn good lawyer yesterday, but if that person really is "good," they will tell Trump "no" almost 99 percent of the time given the corner he has now backed himself into. As a rule, Trump doesn't like being told "no.” He likes "yes" men, like Pence and McGahn. That’s what he’s looking for in a lawyer.
