Sixty percent of Americans oppose Donald Trump’s pardon of the disgraced Joe Arpaio while nearly two-thirds of Americans support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, according to a new NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll:
Six in 10 said they felt it was "wrong" for Trump to pardon Arpaio, who was convicted last month of criminal contempt for ignoring a judge’s order not to detain suspected undocumented immigrants.
The poll also found that 64 percent of Americans support DACA, the Obama-era program allowing young people — known as "Dreamers" — who came to the U.S. illegally as children to remain here. Some also came legally but their visas expired.
A massive 71 percent also support letting undocumented immigrants already working in the U.S. a chance to stay here legally, versus only 26 percent who support a mass deportation force. We must demand DACA, and ultimately permanent protection through legislation, for undocumented youth and their families.
As a Bloomberg editorial stated this week, “there is no good reason to deny Dreamers’ participation in American life, and to deny Americans the benefits of Dreamers’ participation in the economy. In a world of complicated trade-offs, easing the path of Dreamers into education, employment and citizenship is an easy call. Trump should keep the promise to Dreamers. And Congress should pass the Dream Act of 2017 to secure it.”
