Donald Trump's immigration policies are making Harvey worse—even for non-immigrants

Aggressive efforts to detain and deport immigrants are already having a direct effect on the ability of communities damaged by flood and wind to clean up and recover.

More than 70 percent of builders reported shortages of framing crews and carpenters, according to the survey. And more than 60 percent reported an ongoing dearth of drywall installers, concrete workers, and bricklayers.

Trump’s policies have not only led to more immigrants being held or deported, they’ve made even immigrants working through the standard immigration process more reluctant to travel within the country or visit areas where the immigration service is actively sweeping up large numbers of people. Trump’s actions have bred such fear, that both immigrants and non-immigrants are suffering for it.

"There's a lot of misinformation circulating and rumors and misunderstanding of the way immigration works," thanks to leaked copies of unsigned executive orders and the Administration's "restatement of existing law as if it's something new," said Jackie Vimo, a policy analyst at the National Immigration Law Center. That's encouraging fearful immigrants to stay home whenever they can.

While ignoring climate change will certainly compound the effects of storms, and contributed to the damage done by Harvey, it’s unlikely that the changes made by Trump in that area made a significant contribution to the storm. The same can’t be said for Trump immigration policies and how they’re affecting recovery.

And there’s another Trump policy that’s going to make recovery not just slower, but more expensive.
