Speaker Paul Ryan told a Janesville, Wisconsin radio station Friday that “I actually don’t think” Donald Trump should rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows 800,000 immigrant youth to work legally and protects them from deportation from the only country they know as home. Ryan didn’t direct much of anything else to Trump, instead going on to say that this is ultimately “something Congress has to fix.” Gee, if only Paul Ryan had the power to, say, bring permanent relief, perhaps the bipartisan 2017 DREAM Act, to the House floor for a vote:
Rumors abounded Thursday that the administration would announce an end to the program on Friday, but per a tweet from Fox’s John Roberts, there will be no update today (of course, that can easily change with this administration).
At least eight other Republicans so far have called on Trump to not rescind the program. “I’ve urged the President not to rescind DACA,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) in a statement, “an action that would further complicate a system in serious need of a permanent, legislative solution.”
