After fanning the flames of America's culture wars over the National Anthem and assailing the heroic mayor of San Juan's "poor leadership," the mentally challenged Donald Trump suddenly called for "unity" Monday morning in the aftermath of the Las Vegas massacre. Likewise, at the White House briefing Monday afternoon, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders mostly declined to talk about gun policy, saying it wasn't the time or place to do so.
But by Monday night, the White House decided it was time to take action, writes The Hill:
The Trump administration formally backed a House bill Monday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks.
The administration "strongly supports" the bill and "applauds the House of Representatives for continuing its efforts to secure critical pro-life protections," the Office of Management and Budget wrote in a statement of administration policy.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), will come up for a vote in the House on Tuesday.
Because there's nothing more unifying than the abortion issue.
Not only does this step all over their supposed calls for "unity" and taking a break from politics, it's useless. The bill will almost surely pass the House only to falter in the Senate, where it would have to attract Democratic support to surpass the 60-vote filibuster threshold.
So the White House decides to poke its finger in the eye of blue America for a legislative cause that's futile at the very moment they've been telling everyone now's not the time to talk policy.
The hypocrisy is perfectly predictable. We expected nothing less and, sure enough, Team Trump delivered.
