The National Rifle Association was all set to go on the air Tuesday to help Virginia Republicans in next month’s hotly contested state elections, but late on Monday morning, a media buying firm noticed that the NRA just decided to delay their ad launch for a week.
No, we don’t wonder why.
But we do wonder why the NRA isn’t proud to express their views whatever the circumstances. Indeed, since they so feverishly believe that the only answer to gun violence is the proliferation of even more guns, shouldn’t they also believe that “standing up for the Second Amendment” and encouraging people to buy firearms is even more important right this very minute, in the wake of a horrific tragedy like the one unfolding in Las Vegas? Why did they shove their “clenched fist” into their pockets?
The NRA has not been embarrassed into temporary silence out of genuine shame—oh no. Rather, they’re a savvy pack of well-polished shills for the gun industry, and they know how politics is played. They didn’t cancel their ad buy—they just delayed it a week, because they know by then that they’ll be able to go back to their usual shtick with impunity. It’s their usual M.O.: go quiet for a spell after a mass shooting, then go back to pretending like nothing happened.
Virginia Republicans, like gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie and attorney general nominee John Adams—both NRA endorsees—undoubtedly will do the same. But if they had any dignity—and any compassion for these freshest victims of preventable carnage—they’d repudiate the NRA and their help. That’s not going to happen, though, any more than the NRA will have a change of heart.
