INFAMY Is Not Robert K Tanenbaum At His Best

Book Review - Jackie K Cooper
INFAMY by Robert K Tanenbaum

Novelist Robert K. Tanenbaum created a character many years ago by the name of Butch Karp. When he wrote about Butch he also included his wife Marlene, daughter Lucy, and twin sons Zak and Giancarlo. This family has populated Tanenbaum's series for twenty-eight books. The latest is titled INFAMY.

In this story there is a top secret military plot which involves some high ranking government officials. There are also deadly deeds committed by a rich corporate genius. Throw in a few murders and you have the basis for an exciting plot. But somehow it isn't. It feels like everything has been thrown up against the wall and nothing has stuck.

Even in the courtroom scenes, which is where Tanenbaum usually excels, nothing is impressive. There is no excitement, no Perry Mason" surprises, no brilliance on the part of the New York District Attorney - Mr. Karp himself. This is not the way Tanenbaum usually writes, at least not in my recollection.

All of the Karp characters are on display but aside from Butch none of them plays a major part in the story. They are brought into the plot just to remind of us of who they are, and then they move on to hopefully new adventures that will be recounted in a future novel. Still their presence is missed here. We need the repartee that usually flows between Butch and Marlene. We need the family scenes that endear all of the Karp family to us. But most of all we need a tight plot that holds us spellbound to the pages of the story.

INFAMY (what does that title even mean?) is a Tanenbaum novel in name only. It doesn't feature his signature elements. It also seems loosely edited as the flow of the story is not set up in the best interest of the plot. When we read a Tanenbaum novel we expect a certain standard of delivery and quality. INFAMY is a story that any writer could produce, but it is not up to the standards of story telling we expect and demand from Tanenbaum. It is his fault. He has set the bar high with his previous works.

This will not keep me from reading future Tanenbaum books. I know how talented a writer he is, and I suspect this was only a glitch. Next time he will be back entertaining me as well as affecting me emotionally. I hope so for I don't want this to be our last meeting.

If you can be entertained by a story that focuses more on actions than actors, this book might suit you. I am just so used to being entertained by the Karp family that a book primarily about others just doesn't cut it with me.

INFAMY is published by Gallery Books. It contains 368 pages and sells for $27.00.

Everything Ivanka Trumps knows about business she learned running a lemonade stand

When Ivanka Trump was a little girl, hopefully before she was on her father's hot list, she had a lemonade stand. But this childhood lemonade stand was probably not much like your childhood lemonade stand.

"I had a whole lot of lemonade stands growing up, which were helpful in learning about business on the most fundamental level," she says. ...

Ivanka writes that she and her brothers used their "wily charms and persuasive marketing skills" to get their bodyguard, their parents' driver, and some of the household staff to buy enough lemonade to cover their expenses. They "took pity on us and dug deep for their spare change," she writes.

How sweet. They got the hired help to “dig deep” and cover the costs of the poor Trump waifs.

And it really did teach Ivanka Trump a lesson—a lesson she’s using in Trump's new D.C. hotel.

At lunchtime on a recent weekday, 17 people were eating in a space that seats 120. …

Drinking my iced tea, I gazed over the railing at the lobby, then looked again: There was Ivanka, leading an entourage of eager people with clipboards and notebooks.

Ms. Trump swept up the steps into the restaurant. Half the diners stood up. They weren’t customers, somebody in the entourage said, but employees.

Dig deep, employees. It’s going to take a lot more spare change to keep that hotel in business. A lot more. But you can do it. At the most fundamental level, Ivanka learned you can always lean on the staff.

Oh, and thank you for standing when Ivanka came into the room. Remember, bowing is completely optional.

January Jones Addresses Rumor Ashton Kutcher Didn't Encourage Her Acting

January Jones has made it clear that her ex Ashton Kutcher is just a distant memory.

The actress appeared on “Watch What Happens Live” Thursday night and ended up talking about her one-time boyfriend when a snarky caller brought up an awkward past interview.

“January, have you ever talked to Ashton Kutcher since he said you couldn’t act, and what do you think about his acting skills?” the caller asked, and host Andy Cohen pointed out that she was referencing a 2009 GQ article.

Jones had told the magazine that her first boyfriend in Los Angeles wasn’t supportive of her acting, having told her, “I don’t think you’re going to be good at this.” Though she didn’t mention Kutcher specifically, writer Mark Kirby connected the dots and named the “That ‘70s Show” actor.

“I said that someone I had dated previously wasn’t encouraging of my acting, not that I couldn’t,” Jones told the caller on “WWHL,” again refusing to call out Kutcher by name. “I don’t know if that person had ever actually seen me act.”

After a successful run as Betty Draper on “Mad Men” and a few Golden Globe nominations, it’s safe to say Jones is the clear winner here. (Though, to be fair, Kutcher has won a Razzie award.)

“And I haven’t talked to him,” Jones added in her response to the caller. “I’m super happy for him and his family to be political and all that.”

“Was it him?” Cohen asked, going in for the kill.

Jones simply laughed along with the studio audience, leaving us to think, how could it not be?
