Fairview High’s Callie Maddox found a new home Wednesday by signing to play basketball for McNeese State next season.
During her time at Fairview, Maddox led the Panthers to five district championships, three state titles and five semifinal appearances, including a semifinal appearance last season.
Maddox closed out second-year Cowgirls head coach Kacie Cryer’s first signing class.
“We are really excited to add Callie to this signing class,” Cryer said in a news release, “She’s a really special kid.”
Maddox was a three-time all-district and all-Southwest Louisiana first team and two-time district MVP.
“I expect her to go over there, and if they need her she will be ready to play,” said Fairview head coach Kyle Jinks. “I just think she is that type of player. She’s got skills and she’s athletic. But beside that, she is a true team player, and it’s nothing about Callie, it’s about the team. She’s going to do whatever the coaches need her to do to make that program successful.”
The 6-foot Maddox averaged 33.4 points per game her senior year, finishing with 3,690 career points.
“I had been wanting to go to McNeese,” Maddox said, “It’s close to home and they have a really good program, and when they offered me I just jumped at the opportunity.”
Maddox said she will graduate with a 4.0 grade-point average and is her senior class valedictorian. Maddox said she will study exercise science at McNeese then attend physical therapy school. She is also a candidate for the Wendy’s Heisman Award, winner of the John McNeese Scholar’s Award and a nominee for Miss Basketball Louisiana.
“I’m excited,” Maddox said, “but I know it’s going to be a lot different (playing in college).”
Maddox will join a freshman class at McNeese that includes some of the best talent from the area.
“I am so excited about our incoming 2017 class.” Cryer said. “These four early signees Kristen ‘Koko’ Daniels (Barbe), Haley Cooley (Lacassine) and Jahqell Robinson (West Monroe) along with Maddox will bring exactly what we need to have our team, along with our 10 returnees. We are looking for them to come in and help impact our program right away.”
With Maddox graduating, it leaves the Panthers with big shoes to fill.
“Good kid,” Jinks said. “I tell you, one of the best kids I’ve ever coached. Loyal, respectful and probably one of the hardest workers for as much talent as she’s had that I’ve ever had in this program.”
The Cowgirls were 14-17, including 8-10 in the Southland Conference last season.
