But did you know: News organizations are prioritizing mobile development and analytics over getting readers to pay (Nieman Lab)
Data from the International News Media Association World Congress shows that news organizations are easing off on paywalls in favor of focusing on mobile revenue streams and improving analytics. The top priority for news organizations was future digital growth at 94 percent, followed by mobile development at 93 percent and data analytics at 92 percent. But the percentage of publishers prioritizing paywalls is falling quickly, with nearly half as many publishers prioritizing it this year as did in 2013.

Content-recommendation platform Taboola moving into China (Wall Street Journal)
Chinese web company Baidu is investing in Taboola in order to bring the content-recommendation platform into China. In order to bring Taboola to China, Baidu may have invested between $20 million and $30 million in the company. Widgets from Taboola show sponsored and unsponsored links on publishers’ websites, usually at the bottom of an article page.
Office chat platform Slack launches its own podcast (Fast Company)
Slack, an office chat platform, is moving into the rapidly growing podcast market with the launch of “Slack Variety Pack.” The first episode of the podcast premiered Monday, and Slack CMO Bill Macaitis says the idea behind Slack Variety Pack is “stories about work and life, told in a very human voice.” While Slack has sponsored podcasts in the past, Slack Variety Pack is different because it’s designed around the values Slack tries to bring to its service.

When politicians stonewall journalists, continue reporting and answering voters’ questions (PressThink)
When politicians block out reporters, Jay Rosen says reporters shouldn’t talk about their “role” in the campaign because there’s no guaranteed role for journalists. Rather, Rosen says political reporters should figure out what voters want candidates to talk about, persuading voters that you’re on their side so the campaigns have to take notice.
Kik joins the search for deals with publishers (Digiday)
As Facebook is making deals with publishers, messaging app Kik is also looking for publishers and brands to publish content on its platform. Kik is looking to move beyond being a messaging platform to become a place where people can play games, order food, and even do their banking. Kik has introduced new tools for publishers to connect with users, but maintains an opt-in model where the user has to initiate contact first.
