President Obama is outraged at former Gov. Mike Huckabee’s comments that his nuclear deal with Iran “will march Israelis to the oven door”:
You know, the particular comments of Mr. Huckabee are, I think, part of just a general pattern that we’ve seen, that is — would be considered ridiculous if it weren’t so sad…
And if part of what historically has made America great is, particularly when it comes to foreign policy, there has been a recognition that these issues are too serious, that issues of war and peace are of such grave concern and consequence that we don’t play fast and loose that way. We have robust debates. We look at the facts. There are going to be disagreements but we just don’t fling out ad hominem attacks like that because it doesn’t help inform the American people.
First, this is coming from the same president who has repeatedly accused those who oppose his nuclear agreement as wanting war with Iran … the same president whose Secretary of State, John Kerry, compared Israel to the Apartheid regime in South Africa … the same president who said that Republicans’ message to the poor is “you’re on your own” … and that conservatives are “bitter” people who “cling to guns or religion.” Obama is the master of ad hominem attacks. So it’s a little rich for him to be suddenly offended by the coarsened state of our political discourse.
Second, while I wouldn’t have used the same words Huckabee did, he is right. It is a fact that a nuclear bomb would give Iran the ability to incinerate the Jewish state. Prime Minister Netanyahu told Congress that Obama’s agreement “paves Iran’s way to the bomb.” According to a poll released Friday by Maariv newspaper, 71% of Israelis agree. So does Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog – a friend of the Obama administration – who recently said Obama’s Iran deal “will unleash a lion from the cage.”
If you believe that the agreement will help Iran get a nuclear weapon, then what Huckabee said is not in the least bit ridiculous. To the contrary, it is inarguably true.
The difference between Iran and Nazi Germany is that Iran does not yet have the capacity to kill Jews on a scale commensurate with its hatred. A nuclear weapon would give them that capacity. And just as Hitler made no secret of his desire to annihilate the Jews, Iran’s leaders have been equally clear about their intentions. Iran’s supreme leader, the Ayatollah Khamenei, has said:
- “It is the mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to erase Israel from the map of the region.”
- “The Islamic Republic will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground.”
- “Israel … has no cure but to be annihilated.”
- “The Zionist regime is a cancerous tumor and it will be removed.”
You can’t get much clearer than that.
And let’s not forget that Iran’s leader also leads crowds in chants of “Death to America” and recently tweeted a photo of President Obama with a gun to his head.
A nuclear weapon in the hands of a regime like that would give them the power to incinerate the Jewish people — and the American people as well.
What Mike Huckabee said may be have been impolitic, and he might have chosen different words.
But he wasn’t wrong.
