Twitter shuts down websites dedicated to saving politicians’ deleted tweets, saying tweets should not be ‘irrevocable’

A network of 30 sites known as Politwoops, dedicated to preserving politicians’ deleted tweets, has been shut down by Twitter. The Politwoops sites were overseen by the Open State Foundation, which was told by Twitter: “Imagine how nerve-racking — terrifying, even — tweeting would be if it was immutable and irrevocable? No one user is more deserving of that ability than another. Indeed, deleting a tweet is an expression of the user’s voice.” The U.S. branch of Politwoops was shut down by Twitter earlier this year, but the most recent decision affects sites around the world, including the U.K., Canada, Egypt and South Korea.
