Artists to unveil interactive display at Central Library

Central Library, 301 W. Claude St., will display permanent artwork from two local artists during a reception at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30.

Artists Susan Hebert and Katie Pharr Rafferty will unveil their work — which will be displayed in the children’s area — and allow those who attend to add their own artwork to some of the pieces.

Hebert said she has created several watercolor paintings, with four pieces being interactive. She said the paintings feature animals like alligators, pelicans, ducks, fireflies and ladybugs.

Rafferty, who lives in New Orleans, said she created seven butterfly sculptures out of papier-m?ch? as a tribute to her mother, Yvonne, who died in April.

“She loved to read, and as children, we went to the library regularly,” she said. “I wanted to do something in her honor that was different.”

Rafferty said she and Hebert discussed the butterflies they wanted to highlight. Rafferty’s sculptures feature the same butterflies in Hebert’s watercolor paintings.

“It was kind of like it was meant to be,” Rafferty said. “We wanted to feature different types of butterflies.”

Hebert said those who attend the unveiling can put their fingerprints and names on some of the paintings, or they can put their own leaves or acorns on paintings of trees.

“I love doing my art, and it’s exciting to have the chance to put it there and do something for children,” she said. “The paintings have a lot of detail and things that people can find.”

Hebert said the dogs featured in her paintings will be at the library. One is training to be a therapy dog.

Both Hebert and Rafferty said their experience with the library encouraged their love for reading and creativity.

“I think a child’s first exposure to art is children’s literature,” Rafferty said. “To keep that cycle going and hopefully inspire a young artist or scientist, that’s something I’m happy to give back to.”

Refreshments will be provided at the event. For more, call the library at 721-7116.
