DERIDDER — The City Council picked a new council clerk Monday, offering the job to Glenna Luther after interviewing five applicants in executive session.
“She had a very professional presence and demeanor, and I believe she will do great with working with our citizens,” said council President Elizabeth Granger. “She brings 20 years of legal experience with her, and that is something I believe is really essential for this position.”
Earlier this month, the council held a special meeting to discuss the advertising and hiring process for the job — a process that hadn’t been done in nearly 25 years. The previous clerk, Kerri Broussard, was already a city employee when she assumed the post. She vacated the position July 18.
Councilwoman Kimaron Moore had expressed some concerns about applicant screening after Mayor Ron Roberts presented only one resume for consideration.
“I just felt that we needed to be more thorough in how we reviewed the applications,” Moore said. “We had 32 resumes submitted to us, and I am a big believer in that our rules and regulations should be followed carefully in all situations.”
Granger said the panel was given the opportunity to review all submissions before Monday’s meeting.
“Of those applicants, we narrowed it down to five that we then interviewed during executive session before ultimately agreeing on hiring Ms. Luther,” she said.
Also at Monday’s meeting, the panel appointed Granger as president for another two-year term and named Keith Hooper as vice president. Moore had shown interest in the vice president post, but rescinded her bid after most of the votes were cast for Hooper.
