Davante Lewis was the youngest delegate from Louisiana at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, and at this year’s meeting he’s an at-large delegate for Bernie Sanders.
“The atmosphere of the convention is great,” Lewis said. “It’s amazing because here at this convention, you have seen every race, every gender, the LGBT community and every age. You’re in a room with America.”
He said that watching the proceedings and meeting people who share a common goal is energizing and that the speakers at the convention share a sense of hope and optimism about the country.
“One great thing I think President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama did,” Lewis said, “is they really reminded us that yes, there are things that we have to work on in this country, but we cannot forget the promise of what made America great and why America is the country that she is.”
Lewis, who is an elementary school teacher in Atlanta, became involved in politics at age of 12 when he served on the student council at S.J. Welsh Middle School.
He later served two terms as student body president at McNeese State University and was chairman of the Louisiana Council of Student Body Presidents. He also served on the University of Louisiana System board.
Additionally, Lewis ran for a spot on the Calcasieu Parish School Board when he was 18, and he said he plans to one day run again for public office. “I want to serve, and I want to be involved,” he said.
Lewis is working on a double master’s in public affairs and youth development online from the University of Missouri.
