DERIDDER — The Beauregard Parish Clerk of Court’s Office is holding classes on becoming poll commissioners.
Nearly 100 people attended a class Tuesday during which Clerk of Court Brian Lestage reviewed polling booth operations and how to validate voters.
“What everyone here is doing today is qualifying to be a poll commissioner,” Lestage said. “We are discussing the rules and regulations that encompass a voting precinct so that these future commissioners can ensure everything is properly documented and we have no irregularities.”
Attendees learned how to accommodate disabled voters and discussed illiterate voters’ use of assistance in casting ballots.
“There are some people, including candidates or the commissioner in charge, who are not allowed to assist with voting,” Lestage said. “Just remember that of course we are here to help people, but most importantly you have to keep the precinct in order.”
Participants were given an open-book exam, and Lestage said those who pass will be added to a database of commissioners to be selected at random for elections over the next four years. He said about 250 commissioners are needed for each parishwide election.
Another class will be at 6 p.m. today, Aug. 25, in the War Memorial Civic Center.
