Officials in Calcasieu and Cameron parishes are working on the details of an agreement that will allow Cameron to temporarily stage its daily operations in Calcasieu if a hurricane or other emergency occurs.
Calcasieu police jurors on Thursday approved entering into an agreement with the Cameron Police Jury. Ryan Bourriaque, Cameron Parish administrator, said the panel will consider the item at its Sept. 8 meeting.
Dane Bolin, Calcasieu Parish assistant administrator, said Monday that the specifics of the agreement could be finished within 60 days. It will detail several staging areas for daily operations, equipment storage and housing Emergency Operations Center staff.
Bourriaque said the idea first came about during discussions with Dick Gremillion, Calcasieu Office of Emergency Preparedness director, and Danny Lavergne, Cameron OEP director.
While Calcasieu has helped Cameron during past disasters like Hurricanes Rita and Ike, Bolin said the new agreement will strengthen the working relationship between the two parishes during a crisis.
“It’s really a higher level of cooperation,” Bolin said. “All of the logistics are going to be covered.”
Bourriaque said temporary locations listed in the agreement will keep government and emergency operations running smoothly until officials can return to Cameron.
“Once a storm comes through, people are incapacitated in a variety of ways,” he said. “It is difficult to identify a place to lease or rent. Calcasieu Parish has locations previously used as office space that are wide open areas for staging parish equipment. It is very attractive for the (Cameron) Police Jury to pursue this.”
Once the agreement is finalized, Bolin said officials will likely hold tabletop exercises and do walkthroughs on relocating services.
“It will help us make sure we have done everything to get Cameron back up and running as fast as possible,” he said.
