Valentine gets second chance with Tigers

LSU’s Travonte Valentine is 100-percent, certifiably eligible for the upcoming season.

LSU officials confirmed that big noseguard, who could fill a position of real need in new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda’s 3-4 alignment, cleared the final remaining hurdle Monday when he passed the one class he was taking during the school’s summer intercession period.

Valentine (6’3”, 340 lbs.) has been working out with the team since early in August camp, drawing rave reviews from head coach Les Miles.

It will be his second chance with the Tigers, although he didn’t play a down at LSU before attending two junior colleges in the past year.

Miles said even when Valentine was with the Tigers two years ago, it was virtually impossible to block him with one lineman.

But although the NCAA cleared him academically to play, the SEC office never would and he sat out the 2014 season. Miles suspended Valentine, reportedly for academics in the spring of 2015 and booted him from the team completely that summer.

He played six games last season at Arizona Western College before he was dismissed following an arrest for disorderly conduct, a charge that was later dropped.

He then attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he became academically eligible to re-enroll at LSU for the summer.

Valentine, who was rated the No. 1 defensive line prospect coming out of junior college, is expected to see early playing time, possibly starting.

His presence in the middle will likely allow the Tigers to move Davon Godchaux to defensive end in the new alignment, a spot he’s probably more suited for.
