FERC approves Cameron LNG's park-and-ride facility

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Wednesday formally approved a request from Cameron LNG to construct a “park and ride” area for its liquefaction project in Hackberry. The company now has the authority to use just over one acre of previously developed land for the site.

Park-and-ride facilities are parking lots where commuters can leave their vehicles and board public transportation provided by the company. For Cameron LNG, the commuters will be employees headed to various parts of the complex.

Cameron officials requested an expedited review and approval by the commission for the construction of the park-and-ride facility.

In an Aug. 15 FERC filing, Cameron LNG officials said it will be at the northwest corner of the intersection of Louisiana La. 27 and Ellender Drive. “The site is an exiting graveled lot currently used for RV storage,” reads the filing.

Officials said improvements to the lot needed to be made before it could be put into use. The work includes replacing nearby culverts to improve drainage, adding perimeter lighting and fencing, and placing temporary portable toilets and wash stations at the site.

According to the filing, the facility will accommodate up to 95 vehicles. “No trees will be cut and all improvements will be within previously disturbed boundaries of the 1.22 acre site,” reads the filing.

A review of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetlands Inventory shows that there were no wetlands on or adjacent to the site. Since the lot had been improved previously for a similar use, Cameron LNG was not required to complete cultural resource or threatened and endangered species surveys.

FERC issued its final environmental impact statement for the construction and operation of the liquefaction facilities in April 2014. The company received the FERC authorization order in June 2014.

In the notice to proceed with the park, FERC said that “Cameron LNG must comply with all applicable remaining terms and conditions of the order.”

Construction on the project began in October 2014, and commercial operations are expected to begin in 2018.
