Former McNeese quarterback Daniel Sams, 23, was arrested Saturday in connection to the Aug. 12 home invasion at 1315 Lewis St., where former Cowboys defensive back Aaron Sam was also fatally shot.
Police investigating the Aug. 12 incident found the home’s front door kicked in and Aaron Sam, 23, dead of a gunshot wound inside. Deputy Chief Mark Kraus, Lake Charles police spokesman, stated at the time that Sam was part of an armed group that had committed the home invasion.
Kraus said that Daniel Sams’ arrest on Saturday marked the fourth police have made in connection to the incident.
Two initial suspects –
Jacolby Cunigan, 23, and Brannon Davis, 26, both of Lake Charles - were both taken into custody Aug 20.
Cunigan was charged with second degree murder, three counts of attempted first degree murder, armed robbery and home invasion. Davis was charged with home invasion and armed robbery.
Jeremy LeBlanc, 26, also of Lake Charles, was apprehended Aug. 21. He was charged with second degree murder, three counts of attempted first degree murder, home invasion, armed robbery and attempted armed robbery. His total bond was set at $1.4 million.
Kraus states that Sams, of 1513 S. Vintage Lane, has been charged with accessory after the fact to armed robbery, accessory after the fact to home invasion, accessory after the fact to attempted first degree murder and accessory after the fact to second degree murder. His bond was set at $200,000.
Sams, a Kansas State transfer and Slidell native, started all 11 of McNeese’s games last season, throwing for 1,666 yards and 13 touchdowns. He led the Cowboys in rushing, too, scoring 11 touchdowns while averaging nearly 85 yards per game.
