Tropical depression forms near Florida

Tropical Depression 9 has developed from Invest 99-L, according to Todd Mogged, observing program leader with the National Weather Service.

“It’s been trying to develop over the last several days. The support wasn’t there for it.” Mogged said hurricane hunters were sent out Sunday afternoon and they were able to pick out a low level circulation. He said they have a center now and this will be plugged into a model and then they will probably have a better idea of where it is going to go.

Mogged said based on the current information, the storm looks like it is going to move into the southeastern Gulf.

“Tuesday or Wednesday, we are expecting it to go into northern Florida,” he said.

Mogged said it is a tropical depression now and it will probably become a tropical storm and stay that way. “It probably won’t become a tropical storm until tomorrow (Monday).”

Right now, Mogged does not think the storm is headed toward Louisiana.

“There’s always a chance. It depends how strong it gets ...

“It’s just now developed, so we’ll have to give it some time and see what happens overnight and tomorrow.”
