At the end of last school year, Iowa Middle School student Alexis LeJeune set a new school record: she earned 1,007 Accelerated Reader points for reading books throughout the year. She also had the most points of any testtaker in the parish, said Adrienne Oakley, the school’s librarian.
Accelerated Reader is a comprehension test that students complete after reading a qualified book, Oakley explained. She also said that LeJeune would read multiple books at a time, causing Oakley some concern over whether she could pass all her AR tests.
To earn points, a student must score an 85 percent or higher, she said.
LeJeune read between 65 and 75 books last schoolyear, allowing her to earn more than 1,000 points. She has not always been a reader, but learned to enjoy books over time by finding subjects she was interested in, like fantasy and the supernatural.
“Whenever I got into fifth grade, my mom said I had to get a book and read it,” LeJeune said. “I started with ‘Cirque du Freak,’ the vampire series.”
She enjoyed the first book and decided to finish the series. She said only later did she realize that she read the 12-book series in about three days.
Some of her favorite books, other than ones about vampires, are realistic fiction. Her favorite series is the ‘Twilight’ saga.
This recent victory was not her first attempt to earn the most AR points. LeJeune attempted it in sixth grade and had the most points at her school in seventh grade with nearly 750 points.
LeJeune said one of the reasons she earned so many points last school year was because of a bribe from her mom: if LeJeune reached 1,000 points, her mom would give her money to go to Books a Million.
This year, as a freshman at Iowa High School, LeJeune’s goal is to earn 1,200 AR points. Although testing has not started yet, she said she has already read 26 books on which she plans to take tests.
LeJeune’s advice to others is to set goals that are beyond their limits and even if the goal is not met in the beginning, keep trying and don’t give up.
