Local golfers will have a chance to meet the members of McNeese State’s golf team and make a few shots with them in a tournament at Gray Plantation on Sept. 3.
It’s a two-person scramble with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $150 a person with all funds going to the Cowboys golf program. Players can enter by emailing head coach Austin Burk at aburk@mcneese.edu.
Austin Burk said his players — there are 11 — will be scattered throughout the course on different holes during the tournament to help the golfers as they come by.
“They will be able to hit shots for them, putt for them, whatever they want. The big thing is that I want these guys to meet the folks and say hello,” Burk said.
School begins tomorrow at McNeese and the Cowboys will take physicals that day and conduct their first practice on Tuesday. Their first tournament of the fall season is scheduled for Sept. 10-11 at Indiana’s Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville, Indiana.
“We don’t know as yet where we will be practicing because of the rain and wet grounds,” Burk said. “But I’m sure we will get some work in somewhere.”
The defending Southland Conference champions have five lettermen returning but lost Martin Eriksson who won the league title a year ago.
Returnees include Andreas Krokeide, Duncan McNeill, Ian Berrigan, Blake Elliott and Shane Fontenot. Krokeide was the team’s third-leading scorer last year with a 73.88 average, followed by McNeill (75.59), Berrigan (75.76), Elliott (76.38) and Fontenot (77.24).
McNeill finished 13th in last year’s SLC championship run with Krokeide and Berrigan tied for 24th and Elliott 28th.
There are six newcomers, including local products Sutton Farmer, Seth Cox and Reid Giardina.
Farmer, a native of Sulphur, is a transfer from the Air Force Academy where he played two years, posting a 73.8 stroke average a year ago. As a freshmen he led his team in the Mountain West Conference tournament.
He is expected to redshirt and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Cox, from Jennings, and Giardina, from Sulphur, have been among the top local junior players the past few years. In the state high school championship tournaments last year Cox finished fourth in his division and Giardina tied for 14th in his.
The other newcomers are Tom Atkins and Daniel O’Loughlin from England and Alejandro Villasana from Mexico.

The annual Prien Lake Four Ball had to be canceled last week at the Lake Charles Country Club because of rain. Assistant pro Greg Sonnier said it was the first time in the tournament’s history that the event had to be sidelined.

The team of Quinn Burkhalter, Shane Fontenot, Logan Hayes and Farmer won the recent Barbe Alumni tournament played at Koasati Pines in Kinder. They posted a scramble score of 55.
Mike Marceaux, Doug Hebert, Ben Suarez and Gordon Poncho finished second at 56, while Greg Poncho, Brad Ortego, Scott Ortego and Nick Ortego placed third with 57.
It was the sixth edition of the tournament that raises funds for the Bucs football program.

The annual Bishop’s Golf Classic will be played Oct. 7 at The National in Westlake. It’s a four-person scramble with a $500 entry fee per team or $125 a player. Proceeds benefit the priest retirement fund and the seminarian educational fund.
