BATON ROUGE— LSU expects Leonard Fournette to return to practice this week, but the Tigers went though their final major scrimmage Saturday without the Heisman Trophy hopeful at running back.
“I think he plays this week,” head coach Les Miles said after the 100-play scrimmage. “But I think that’s going to be up to the trainers and not the coach.”
Miles insisted, however, that at worst Fournette, who suffered a sprained ankle last week, would be ready to go when LSU opens the season against Wisconsin in Green Bay’s Lambeau Field in two weeks.
Otherwise, Miles was typically vague when evaluating Saturday’s scrimmage, which was chased from Tiger Stadium to the indoor facility by lightning in mid-practice.
Also missing the scrimmage was starting wide receiver Travin Dural, who had a “nicked hand” but should return “the next time we take the field,” Miles said.
Miles did shed light on the offensive line, where LSU has been mixing and matching players for most of the spring and August camps.
As of now, he said, the starting five would not include returning starter Maea Teuhema at tackle.
But Teuhema, who started as a true freshman last season, was slowed by a sprained ankle early in camp and is just now coming along.
He’d be the first off the bench on a line that includes K.J. Malone at left tackle, Will Clapp at left guard, Ethan Pocic at center, Josh Boutte at right guard and Toby Weathersby at right tackle.
But Miles didn’t rule out Teuhema cracking the lineup.
“He’s really pretty good,” Miles said. “I think he’s really getting over the hump (from the injury) right now. He’s practiced for the last week. He’s less slowed and showed more agility and speed. How we’ll finish here will be interesting to see.”
Regardless, Miles said, “It’s going to be a physical front five.”
Miles gave only generalities for statistics, saying LSU ran for 200 yards and threw for another 200. The quarterbacks, he said, completed “about 65 percent” of their passes, but he also like what he saw defensively.
“I didn’t see missed tackles and there was pressure on the quarterback,” he said. “It was the style of scrimmage you would expect from a good defense.”
He said freshman offensive lineman Willie Allen suffered leg injury and will redshirt this year.
The Tigers will turn their attention to the season opener as school opens this week.
“We want to get the team settled in with classes, and begin the transition to focus on Wisconsin more than LSU,” Miles said.
