Starks Library hosts Read to Your Doll program

Children gathered at the Starks Library on Monday to read to dolls as part of a Junior League of Lake Charles program designed to improve literacy and boost confidence.

“Programs such as these allow young children to gain confidence reading aloud to a nonjudgmental audience,” said Stephanie Potter, head of the Junior League’s literacy committee.

Children are able bring a toy, a stuffed animal or doll to read to, or they can read to an American Girl doll provided by the Junior League. The dolls are available for checkout at each of the 12 library branches, though there may be a waiting list.

They come with accessories, such as a bed for the doll and a journal for the child to write in, to enhance the experience.

Potter said the Starks event was small but successful.

“The girls who attended had a great time listening to a story, reading to their dolls and enjoying the provided refreshments,” she said.

The Junior League hosts an event every month at a different location. The next one will be in the Moss Bluff Library at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 26.
