“We knit, share what we’ve made and ask questions about problems that we’ve encountered,” said class leader Audrey Ortego. She said it is a way to express her creativity. “I just feel like it feeds my soul to be able to make something with my hands and show it off.”
Ortego said some people want to make something they can give their grandchildren and maybe pass on, and others come for the class for a sharing time. “It’s a way of sharing what’s going on in your life and helping each other.”
Class member Dolores McCormick said it is nice to come to the class and have some other people with similar interests to share ideas. She said she enjoys knitting and crocheting because she does not like to sit and not have her hands busy. She was crocheting a winter hat on this particular day.
McCormick said the difference between knitting and crocheting is two needles and one needle. Both are really methods of looping yarn together, just in different styles. Knitting uses a pair of long needles to form the loops, moving a set of loops from one needle to another. The stitches are held on the needle or “live.”
Crochet uses a single hook, to hook the loops together directly on the piece. “You use the same materials,” she said.
McCormick has been knitting since she was a child and she learned from her friend’s mother and books. She said there are two stitches in knitting — knit and purl. “You knit from the left to the right and your yarn is in the back. If you purl, you go from right to left and your yarn is inthe front.”
Linda Briggs said she comes to the class because she is self-taught and she needs a lot of help. “YouT-ube can do just so much.”
Beginner Elizabeth Dewoody said she enjoys socializing with the ladies. “I really enjoy knitting because it’s therapeutic for my hands with arthritis and it helps me with my memory. It’s just great exercise.” She is designing and making a sweater for her 22-month-old granddaughter.
“I come to this class to learn new techniques and to socialize,” said Joan Benoit. She said she finds knitting very relaxing and she can watch T.V. and knit at the same time. “I find it very soothing.” She was making a sweater for her grandaughter’s dolls.
Mary Drost, a pre-K teacher at Barbe Elementary School, who has only been knitting a month, said she brought her daughter and her niece to the library so that they could learn together. “It’s something new to learn.” She said she wants to learn to teach finger knitting to her Girl Scout troop.
Mia Drost, Sulphur High school student, said knitting is something she can do while she is reading. “I like the class because it’s quiet.”
