New McNeese State softball coach James Landreneau will receive a one-year contract with a $46,013 base salary, documents show.
Landreneau, who was promoted from Joanna Hardin’s staff when she left to become head coach at Virginia, is also eligible for bonuses for postseason play and extraordinary achievement. Hardin had a $45,000 base salary at McNeese.
New increments for these extraordinary achievements, available to all McNeese coaches, were approved at the University of Louisiana System’s Board of Supervisors meeting in February.
Landreneau’s contract is subject to the board’s approval at its Sept. 9 meeting, which was rescheduled from August due to flooding.
Should the Cowgirls repeat as Southland Conference champions, Landreneau would receive a $5,000 bonus.
He’s eligible for $1,000 for each of the following, if they occur: each win in a national postseason tournament, winning Southland Conference coach of the year, winning the Southland Conference tournament title and/or an automatic or at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
A $2,500 bonus accompanies a National Coach of the Year award and $10,000 accompanies a national championship.
Landreneau, a Mamou native, has been on the McNeese staff since 2013, under former coach Mike Smith. The Cowgirls have won the Southland in three of his four years on staff and he’s coached three Southland players of the year, including returning catcher Erika Piancastelli.
The Cowgirls won a school-record 43 games last season, led mostly by Landreneau’s offense, which set school records in runs scored, RBI and on-base percentage.
