Byrd at Barbe
Last year, this season opener resulted in Byrd routing Barbe in Shreveport. The Bucs will look to return the favor, led by running back Kirkland Banks, who was also a member of the Barbe baseball team that beat Byrd in last spring’s state championship game. Byrd QB/LB Zavier Moore and safety Steele Netterville starred on the baseball team.
St. Thomas More at Sulphur
St. Thomas More enters the game ranked No. 2 in Class 4A while the Sulphur Tors feature an explosive offense led by QB Byron Walker running backs J’Cobi Skinner and Glenn Willis. STM will counter with a hefty, experienced defensive line as it attempts to extend its 9-6 series lead.
Sam Houston at St. Louis
Sam Houston has owned the series the last three seasons, but on paper St. Louis Catholic looks to have the upper hand this year with a loaded defense that includes all-state senior defensive lineman Sam Bruchhaus. The Broncos will be breaking in a brand-new offensive lineup that had their moments last week against Jennings in the jamboree.
DeRidder at South Beauregard
Golden Knights QB Hayden Gunter tossed three touchdown passes in his first career start to lead South Beauregard to a 26-20 win last year. The Dragons ran for 253 yards in the game.
Notre Dame at LaGrange
The Pioneers lost 10 starters on defense from last season, but added transfer DT Tyler Shelvin, who is No. 18 on epsn.com’s national recruiting list. Shelvin has committed to LSU. LaGrange’s last season-opening win as a 40-12 win over Washington-Marion in 2010.
Leesville at Westlake
After consecutive 2-8 seasons, the Westlake Rams are looking to open the season on the right foot. The game will feature a new triple-option offense centered around backs Brevan Ned and Joseph January. Leesville is led by powerful running back Cory McCoy.
Washington-Marion at Marksville
The Tigers ran for 332 yards in last year’s 40-26 win over the Charging Indians. W-M running back Jacobi Taylor ran for 147 yards and a touchdown.
Iota at Sacred Heart-Ville Platte
Iota ended a nearly three-year winning drought with its victory against Sacred Heart in last year’s season opener. QB Trae Rambin is back to lead the offense after starting as a freshman most of last season.
Iowa at Crowley
The Yellow Jackets will look to open its season with a win against one of 2015’s most dominant teams, the defending District 3-4A champion Gents. Yellow Jackets receivers Andre Sam and Cole Fleming will test a Crowley secondary that lost stars Jacq’co Price and John Marceaux from last year.
Hamilton Christian at Lake Arthur
The defending District 4-1A champions will show off a new system under new head coach Mark Delaney. Lake Arthur has running back Trey Hargrave returning for his senior season after consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. The Tigers will play in front of an antsy home crowd that didn’t know if this game would be played a couple weeks ago due to flooding in the area.
Oakdale at Oberlin
The Allen Parish rivals resumed the series last year with Oakdale winning 40-0. The most recent meeting was 2002, a 48-6 Warriors win.
Basile at Vinton
With both teams returning the several key players, including a pair of star running backs in Basile’s Jared Belle and Vinton’s Tony St. Julien, expect another close game between Vinton and Basile this week. Basile won 20-14 last year in overtime in the first meeting between the two programs.
Avoyelles at Welsh
Welsh’s road to a deep run in the Class 2A playoffs begins with a game against Class 3A Avoyelles. The Greyhounds will look to show off a stout defense led by linebacker Josh Pickle.
Lafayette Christian at Elton
The Indians struggled to move the ball in its jamboree against Lake Arthur and Welsh. Elton hopes it can find its rhythm offensively so it can start a second consecutive season with a win against the Knights.
E. Beauregard at Ascension Epsicopal
East Beauregard returns one starter from last year, running back James Bailey. Ascension Episcopal will have four new starters along the defensive line that will have to deal with East Beauregard’s run-heavy, double-tight, double-wing scheme.
Centerville at Grand Lake
Centerville went 3-8 in its first year of football last season, including a 13-12 win over Grand Lake. The Bulldogs opened the season with three wins before finishing with an eight-game losing streak. Grand Lake lost its last five after opening the season 3-2.
