First take on Week 1 of prep football season

The first week of the high school football regular season is here, with a slew of intriguing nondistrict matchups on the schedule. In today’s Three Point Stance, Rodrick Anderson, Warren Arceneaux and Tyler Nunez discuss the marquee games of Week 1.

Which Week 1 big schools game catches your eye?

WA: Byrd at Barbe. After suffering a blowout loss in Shreveport last year, this is a good litmus test for the Bucs, who return a slew of starters, including their offensive playmakers — Kirkland Banks, Nate Briscoe and Gavin Nettles.

TN: Sam Houston at St. Louis. Last year’s game was a back-and-forth shootout with big plays on all facets of the game, including special teams. Sam Houston opened its season with a win. The Saints will surely look to return the favor on Friday.

RA: St. Thomas More at Sulphur. The matchup has become one of the best Lake Area-Lafayette rivalries. STM, state runner-up in Division II last year, leads the series 9-6 and goes into the game as the No. 2 team in Class 4A (Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll), but the Tors have one of the best offenses in the area this year and have pulled off upsets before. The Tors beat then-No. 4 STM 35-28 in 2012, led by current Mississippi State pitcher Kale Breaux.

What is the most interesting small school game?

WA: Delta Charter at Lake Charles College Prep. Things are looking up for the second-year Blazers, who get four actual home games this year and picked up their first competitive victory last week with a jamboree win over Rosepine.

TN: Kinder at Jennings. What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object or, more appropriately, another unstoppable force? Two high-powered offenses — defending Class 2A state champ Kinder and a Jennings squad led by heavily recruited running back Travis Etienne — will kick off in a rematch of one of last season’s most big-play, high-scoring games.

RA: Basile at Vinton. Vinton would like nothing more than to make up for last year’s overtime loss to Basile. Turnovers cost the Lions dearly, but this year could be different with all of their skill players on offense returning. Basile brings in a team that reached the quarterfinals last year and returns 12 starters.

What matchup are you looking forward to?

WA: LaGrange’s new-look offense vs. Notre Dame defense. The Gators lost workhorse running back Markell Hawthorne to graduation. Head coach Jules Sullen said this year the team will have a more perimeter-oriented approach. It will be tested against the Pioneers, who feature one of the nation’s top recruits in defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin.

TN: Sulphur run game vs. St. Thomas More. The Tors will find out just how good their two-headed monster of Glenn Willis and J’Cobi Skinner really is Friday night when they take on an STM squad that limited both backs to fewer than 80 yards last season and allowed 16.5 points per game in a Division II runner-up season.

RA: Basile at Vinton. Vinton RBs Tony St. Julien and Trevon Tillman vs. Basile defense. Basile had a hard time containing St. Julien, who scored twice on the Bearcats last year. Now they have to stop the one-two punch of St. Julien and junior transfer Tillman. Tillman showed his explosive potential last week, scoring on his lone touch from 31 yards out.
