St. Louis and its new secondary will be tested against Sam Houston and its new, well, everything on offense, when the teams meet Friday night at Cougar Stadium in a regular-season opener.
The Broncos are starting over offensively after being depleted by graduation, including the departure of all-state running back Trevantai Thompson, who scored four touchdowns in last year’s 41-28 win.
The Saints lost four members of their secondary but feature experienced D-line and linebacking units. The Saints are coming off a 27-8 win over Washington-Marion at the Sulphur jamboree last week.
“The jamboree went good, it was pretty clean,” said Saints head coach Charlie Cryer. “There are still some things we need to work on, but I was happy with the way they competed and executed. We played pretty well all the way around. There were some things we had to correct this week and we are trying to get some people healthy. We had both guards out and a running back out. This is a big game for us because of the power points.”
Cryer said he was impressed by the Broncos at the jamboree.
“Sam Houston is a good team,” he said. “They replaced a lot on offense, but they played well against Jennings (a 7-3 loss at the Sulphur jamboree). They had some breakdowns in the red zone that hurt them, but I thought they moved the ball extremely well. Defensively they are real solid. Their nose guard (Myles Simien) is something to watch; he is tough. They fly to the ball defensively. We have to be ready for that.”
Cryer said his new secondary is on the right track.
“They did a good job; I was happy with them,” he said. “I thought they played well. They will go through some growing pains early in the year. We hope they will be ready to go by the time district gets here. They did their assignments well. It is going to be a work in progress for a while, but they competed hard and played hard. With the sophistication of the St. Thomas More passing game, they saw a lot of stuff in the scrimmage that was good for them.”
Other 3-5A games
Sulphur and Barbe will look to avenge last year’s road losses to perennial state powers STM and Byrd, respectively. STM beat Sulphur 31-13 while Byrd beat the Bucs 53-14 in Shreveport.
The Tors and Bucs picked up jamboree wins last week, with Sulphur beating South Beauregard 28-7 and Barbe blanking Westlake 30-0.
“They are always well coached,” Tors head coach Jeff Wainwright said of STM. “They have always done a really good job on defense. They have had a great program the last four or five years making deep runs in the playoffs. (Last year) A lot of our kids were young sophomores early in the year. They got overpowered early in the game and it was one of their (STM) best teams. This year we feel that we have a lot of experience and early in the game we should be way more competitive.”
