CROWLEY — When Iowa needed it most, the Yellow Jackets’ defense came through in a big way Friday evening in their season opener, making a goal-line stand on a conversion attempt against Crowley at Gardiner Memorial Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets stopped Crowley on a 2-point conversion in the last minute to hold on for a 29-28 nondistrict win.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) took a 29-22 lead on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Dyami Huntsberry to Markail Nixon. Crowley (0-1) drove from its 39-yard line in the last 2 minutes, pulling within a point on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Paul Dugar to Xavier Johnson before going for the win with the 2-point conversion. Dugar was stuffed short of the goal line on a rushing attempt.
“Our kids just hung in there all night,” said Iowa head coach Sean Richard, whose defense held the Gents to eight points and 116 total yards at the half. “Crowley always has a great team. Sometimes in Week 1, it is tough to get four quarters out of everyone. We showed guts to finish the game strong and not give up. The kids stepped up and made a great play on the 2-point conversion.”
Crowley led 22-19 before Iowa drove to the Gents’ 4-yard line. After losing yards on consecutive plays, Jaren Dugas kicked a 22-yard field goal to tie the score.
“We had some confidence in our extra point team,” Richard said. “We have been working hard on that; it had been our Achilles heel. Dugas stepped up and made it and then our defense held on.”
On the ensuing drive, Crowley drove to midfield before fumbling the ball away, setting up Dixon’s go-ahead touchdown reception.
Iowa scored in the first quarter on a 19 yard run by Joseph Figueroa. Huntsberry ran in from 10 yards later in the quarter. Cole Fleming scored on a 35-yard pass from Huntsberry in the second quarter.
