Our Lady Queen of Heaven students work to help flood victims

With the devastating floods affecting much of south Louisiana, Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic School students collected and gave donations of items to the victims.

“It started out just being as terrified as every other person in south Louisiana wondering how we can help,” said middle school coordinator Kelly DeMolle.

Soon the plan evolved into creating “blessing baskets” filled with supplies like socks, rags, cleaning liquids, bottled waters and diapers. Students also wrote letters containing Bible verses and encouraging notes that were put inside the baskets.

Each grade level, including the day care, was to bring certain items starting the second day of school. But items came with the students starting the first day, DeMolle said.

“By Friday we had so much stuff just on day two that we were able to fill our original goal, which was 100 baskets,” she said.

That weekend the school was able to send 80 baskets by trailer to Crowley and pass out others.

The following week, the students brought in more items, filling another 100 baskets.

“It became bigger than I ever thought it could,” DeMolle said.

Eighth-grader and Student Council President Zachary said giving made him feel “good inside” because he and his family were able to give back after others gave to the Lake Area during Hurricane Rita’s aftermath.

“We’re just returning the favor,” said Taylor, eighth-grader and Beta Club president.

Both Zachary and Taylor, along with their fellow eighth-graders, brought cases of water and rags and helped load the trailer with baskets.

DeMolle said the students are often asked to give and in return they can get free dress or another reward. However, this time the students gave without reward.

“We wanted them to know that sometimes you do these things because it’s the right thing to do; not because you’re getting something in return,” DeMolle said. “They did this with super force ... they genuinely just felt for these people and wanted to help them.”
