Trespass horse adoption begins

Enrollment has opened for nonprofit groups and residents to begin the process to adopt horses from Fort Polk property.

Officials expect the first group of 10-30 horses to be available between mid-September and mid-October and hope to have animal welfare groups ready and waiting to accept the animals.

“This is a fantastic program that gives the American people the ability to provide a good home for these horses and the opportunity to help the Army by removing this hazard from our military training area,” said Fort Polk garrison commander Col. David G. Athey.

Officials estimate that nearly 750 trespass horses roam the training areas at Fort Polk and Peason Ridge, creating a safety hazard for soldiers and disrupting training.

“We have been lucky so far, but it is only a matter of time before an airplane filled with soldiers collides with a horse on a landing strip or some other avoidable catastrophe,” Athey said.

Post spokeswoman Kim Reischling said that over 200 comments were submitted during the final phase of the determination process to approve of adopting out the horses. But so far, she said, no groups have signed up for the program.

Animal welfare groups who sign up with nonprofit documentation will be placed on a list. Residents who sign up will be able to adopt horses after the list of animal welfare groups has been exhausted.
