Burn ban instituted in Beauregard

Extremely dry conditions have prompted officials to institute a burn ban in Beauregard Parish.

Glen Mears, parish emergency preparedness director, said the ban was in place as of 3 p.m. Thursday by approval of Police Jury President Rusty Williamson. Official documentation is expected to be signed and put in place today. The ban will be in effect until Nov. 30, unless a significant amount of rainfall occurs before then, Mears said.

“Right now, our area is in a drought and the ground is so dry that it’s like a tinderbox,” he said. “Fire departments have been fighting wood and grass fires for most of the week and at this point, even the smallest fire can get out of hand quickly with just a little bit of wind.”

Mears said violators of the ban could receive a citation to appear in court, along with a fine, and repeat offenders could face jail time.

“We just want to keep everyone’s homes and properties safe,” he said.
