The DeRidder Masonic lodge will place a newly filled time capsule in the cornerstone of the Beauregard Parish Historic Courthouse at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.
A capsule placed in 1914 was discovered earlier this year in the cornerstone. It contained traditional Masonic heirlooms, along with paperwork on the construction of the courthouse and an issue of the news journal the DeRidder Enterprise.
Beauregard Police Juror Ronnie Jackson, a Mason, said the lodge is still preparing the items for the new capsule.
“An unwritten rule of the Masonic lodge is to place a square, a compass, and a Bible in every time capsule that is placed, so those things will be the first to be placed inside,” he said.
“In addition to those items, we are looking to add some coins minted in 2016, a list of all the city and parish leaders, as well as lodge members, and some documentation on the courthouse renovations that are going on right now.
“We want to be sure and leave as much of the current history that we can for the future generation who finds the capsule to enjoy.”
The original capsule was found when renovation workers moved cornerstones and noticed that one had a small wooden door in its center. On Saturday, Jackson said, a marker will be added to the cornerstone to signify its importance.
