Chemistry expo sparks young minds

Nearly 3,000 area sixth-graders attended the Lake Area Industry Alliance’s annual Chem Expo at the Lake Charles Civic Center on Thursday.

The expo, a hands-on event that has been nationally recognized by the American Chemical Society, encourages students to take an interest in science. It was first held in 1999.

Students, with the aid of volunteers, used basic ingredients like soap, milk and dishwashing detergent to learn about concepts like monomer and polymer chains and surface tension.

Volunteers also talked to students about the use of everyday chemistry processes in local industrial plants.

One experiment station involved putting liquid glue in a sodium tetraborate solution to link individual monomers into a polymer chain — causing the glue to solidify into a putty-like substance.

The students at the station were able to make their own glue balls and test their elasticity by bouncing them.
